Shopify is a good home for a wine or spirits brand. But the platform is the easy part. US alcohol law, your payment provider and your carrier decide what you can actually sell, to whom, and where.
Not legal advice. Rules change often. Confirm with a beverage alcohol attorney, your payment provider and your carrier before you launch.
What Shopify itself says
Shopify’s Help Center has a page on alcohol. For the US it says, in short:
- Alcohol is regulated mostly by states. Check the laws of your state and your customers’ states.
- Get and keep every license you need, with records.
- Use effective age verification to block purchases and deliveries to anyone under 21.
- Follow the shipping laws of both your state and the destination state.
- In California, you can show a Prop 65 alcohol warning using product disclosures.
Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy has no alcohol-specific rule. Its main rule is simple: you can’t use Shopify to do anything illegal where you do business.
One exception to know: alcohol is a prohibited product on Shop, Shopify’s shopping app and sales channel. Your store can sell wine and spirits, but those products won’t list in Shop.
Shopify Payments and alcohol in the US
This is where most confusion lives. Here is what the primary sources say as of November 2026:
- Shopify’s eligibility page lists prohibited business types. Alcohol is not named. The page points to each country’s processor list.
- In the US, Shopify Payments runs on Stripe and PayPal. Stripe’s prohibited and restricted list does not list alcohol for the US. (It lists alcohol as prohibited in India and Thailand and restricted in Canada and Indonesia.)
- Shopify’s Payments terms say some businesses need extra review and approval.
In practice, Shopify does review alcohol stores. AccelPay’s help center describes Shopify flagging alcohol stores and asking urgent questions, and some merchants report payouts held during review. There is no published review timeline.
We could not find a current, official Shopify statement that says “alcohol is approved for Shopify Payments in the US.” So plan for a review: have your licenses, your seller-of-record setup and your age verification method ready to send.
Who takes the money matters more
If a licensed retailer is the seller, the retailer’s payment flow takes the money, not your Shopify Payments account. That is how most three-tier compliant setups work. In that case, Shopify Payments may only handle non-alcohol items like merch, or nothing at all.
Payment gateway alternatives
You can add a third-party provider under Settings > Payments. Before you sign, ask the provider in writing:
- Do you underwrite alcohol sales in the US, and for which states?
- Who is the merchant of record: me, or a licensed retailer?
- What reserves, holds or rolling reserves apply?
- Does it work with Shopify’s current checkout (no checkout.liquid)?
Alcohol-specific options exist. AccelPay offers a payments app for Shopify built for alcohol brands. BottleNexus and ReserveBar’s LiquidCommerce run a checkout where licensed retailers take the payment.
Age verification on Shopify
Three layers, each doing a different job:
| Layer | What it does | Typical tool |
|---|---|---|
| Age gate on the site | Visitor confirms or enters their birth date | Theme code or an age gate app |
| Verification at checkout | Checks the buyer’s identity data against records, or an ID scan | Third-party verification service through an app |
| Adult signature at delivery | A person 21+ shows ID and signs | Carrier service (UPS, FedEx) |
A pop-up gate alone does not verify anyone. Shopify asks for “effective age verification,” and the Wine Institute’s code recommends third-party verification at checkout. Our age verification guide covers the details.
Shopify Plus and checkout extensibility
The old way of adding age checks to checkout was custom code in checkout.liquid or “additional scripts.” That is gone:
checkout.liquidno longer works for the information, shipping and payment steps.- Plus stores lost scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025. Other plans lost them on August 26, 2026.
What replaces it:
- Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are Shopify Plus only. Many age verification and compliance apps use them.
- Cart and checkout validation with Shopify Functions runs on the server and can block a checkout (for example, a ship-to state you can’t serve). Stores on any plan can use it through public apps from the Shopify App Store. Custom apps with Functions generally need Plus.
- Shopify itself warns that checks in the browser can be bypassed. Put rules that matter, like blocked states, in server-side validation.
If an app still asks you to paste code into checkout, it is out of date.
Shipping: carrier rules for alcohol
| Carrier | Wine | Spirits | Beer | Key rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | No | No | No | Liquors with 0.5% alcohol or more are nonmailable under federal law |
| UPS | Licensed shippers with a signed UPS wine agreement | Licensed shippers with a spirits agreement, only where state law allows | Licensed shippers with a beer agreement | Separate agreement per type, adult signature 21+ |
| FedEx | Licensees to consumers under a FedEx agreement, approved states only | Licensee to licensee only | Licensee to licensee only | Adult signature required |
Key points:
- USPS will not carry alcohol. Bills to change this, like H.R. 3011 in 2025, had not become law when we last checked. Don’t plan around them.
- UPS and FedEx need a signed alcohol agreement tied to your carrier account. A standard account is not enough. Your label tool must support that account and the adult signature service.
- Carriers follow state law. An agreement does not make a shipment legal in a state that bans it.
- Label the box. Most states want “contains alcohol, adult signature required” or exact wording of their own.
When to use a licensed partner instead
Run your own Shopify checkout only if you are a licensed producer shipping your own product to states where you hold permits. That fits many wineries.
For most spirits brands, importers and beer brands, a licensed partner is the better route:
- BottleNexus connects Shopify storefronts to a network of licensed retailers and handles compliance, age verification, tax and routing.
- ReserveBar and LiquidCommerce let brands sell on their own sites while licensed retailers fulfill orders. (ReserveBar and AccelPay announced a merger in March 2026 and said both platforms would keep running.)
- AccelPay offers alcohol payments and ecommerce infrastructure for brand sites.
The trade-offs are real. The retailer is the seller, so in many states the retailer sets the final price. Fees and margins vary. Customer data terms vary. Ask each partner:
- Which states can you serve today, for my product type?
- Who sets the price, and who pays for shipping promotions?
- What customer and order data do I get, and can I send it to Klaviyo?
- How do you verify age at checkout and at delivery?
- How does your checkout fit Shopify’s current checkout and my theme?
A quick checklist
- Confirm the legal route: producer shipping, licensed retailer, or both.
- Map which ship-to states each route covers.
- Decide who takes payment, and get that approval in writing.
- Add an age gate, checkout verification and adult signature.
- Block unsupported states with server-side validation.
- Sign carrier alcohol agreements, or let your partner handle shipping.
- Hide alcohol from the Shop channel.
How False Rules helps
We built the Dos Hombres mezcal Shopify store and its BottleNexus integration. As a ReserveBar partner, we build brand storefronts on ReserveBar’s storefront SDK for spirits brands such as Casa Dragones. If you’re deciding between your own checkout and a licensed partner, write to us with your product and target states. We answer in writing.
General information, not legal advice. Rules change: check with the state and your compliance partner.
Questions
Is selling alcohol allowed on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify's Help Center says you must follow the laws where you are and where you sell, hold the right licenses, use effective age verification to block buyers under 21, and follow shipping laws. Alcohol is not allowed in the Shop app channel.
Can I use Shopify Payments to sell wine or spirits in the US?
Shopify Payments does not list alcohol as a prohibited business in the US, and neither does Stripe's US list. Shopify does review alcohol stores and can ask for licenses and details, and payouts can be held during a review. Plan for that, or use a licensed partner whose retailer takes the payment.
Can I ship alcohol with USPS?
No. Federal law makes intoxicating liquors with 0.5% alcohol or more nonmailable. Bills to change this have been introduced in Congress, but none had become law when we last checked.
Do I need Shopify Plus to sell alcohol?
No. But Plus gives you checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, which some age verification and compliance tools use. On other plans you can still use public apps with Shopify Functions for checkout validation.
When should a spirits brand use BottleNexus, ReserveBar or LiquidCommerce instead of its own checkout?
Almost always, if you want to sell in more than a handful of states. Spirits direct shipping is legal in only 10 states plus DC, and importers usually can't use it at all. A licensed partner routes each order to a licensed retailer who can legally sell to that address.
