Bottle Nexus explained: alcohol checkout for your Shopify site

Old rule: Shopify can't sell your spirits.Your Shopify site sells; a licensed retailer fulfills.

How Bottle Nexus works in 2026: a buy button and checkout on your own site, licensed retailers as merchant of record, Shopify fit, fees, pros and cons.

Facts checked: 5 min read

Bottle Nexus is a direct-to-consumer (DTC) checkout for alcohol brands. You keep your own website. Bottle Nexus adds a buy button and a checkout. A licensed retailer in its network fulfills the order. This guide explains how that works and how it fits a Shopify store, as of November 2026.

What Bottle Nexus is

Bottle Nexus describes itself as “the leading direct-to-consumer alcohol compliance and checkout platform.” Its homepage sums up the model in one line: your website, its buy button, connected retail fulfillment.

Key facts from its own pages and press releases:

  • Based in Southern California. Releases are datelined San Diego.
  • More than 500 active partners, reached in under three years, per a September 2026 release. Partners include brands, retailers and affiliate creators.
  • Brands shown on its site include Armand de Brignac, Dry Fly Distilling, Rare Character, The Lost Explorer, Brother’s Bond, Three Hearts Rum and Suerte Tequila.
  • A March 2026 partnership with LibDib, a three-tier distribution platform, so LibDib producers can sell online while staying inside their wholesale network.
  • It works closely with Vista Fulfillment Group, a fulfillment company founded in 2006, per Vista’s February 2026 release. On the July 2026 Sassenach Spirits launch, Vista handled co-packing and fulfillment while Bottle Nexus ran checkout.

Most numbers here come from the company. We have not seen independent audits of them.

Why a retailer has to make the sale

The US sells alcohol through the three-tier system. Producers sell to licensed wholesalers. Wholesalers sell to licensed retailers. Retailers sell to consumers. Few states let an out-of-state distillery ship spirits straight to a consumer.

Shopify’s own rules say an alcohol merchant must hold every license needed to sell and deliver, use effective age checks, and ship in line with both states’ laws. Most spirits brands do not hold a retail license in each state. So they need a licensed retailer to make the sale. Bottle Nexus provides the route to one.

Who is the merchant of record

The merchant of record, also called seller of record, is the business that legally makes the sale. It takes the payment, collects tax and is responsible for compliance.

Bottle Nexus is clear on this: “Participating licensed retailers are the merchants of record.” The brand is not the seller. For an existing order, the FAQ tells shoppers to contact the fulfillment retailer named in their confirmation email.

How the checkout works

The public demo walks through six steps: Buy Now, cart, information, choose retailer, shipping and payment.

  • Embedded on your site. Bottle Nexus says the buy button “brings the checkout journey onto your website.” The shopper stays on your domain.
  • Retailer routing. The order goes to a participating licensed retailer. The demo includes a choose-retailer step.
  • Compliance steps. Age verification, delivery eligibility, tax calculation and retailer routing are part of the platform. On the Sassenach launch, Bottle Nexus listed state-by-state compliance, age verification, tax, routing and shipment tracking.
  • Payments. Express methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, depending on your setup.
  • Split cart. Bottle Nexus shows an example where the bottle goes to a licensed retailer, glassware to a supplier and flowers to a gift partner.
  • Headless and API. For custom builds, it offers open APIs and MCP integrations. MCP is the Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI agents to call a service. The public page gives no technical detail.

How it plugs into a Shopify store

The usual split is simple. Shopify runs the brand site. Bottle Nexus runs the alcohol checkout.

  1. Shopify holds the site. Theme, product pages, content, blog, SEO and any non-alcohol merchandise.
  2. Bottle Nexus holds the alcohol sale. Alcohol products use the Bottle Nexus buy button and checkout instead of Shopify checkout.
  3. Merchandise can stay on Shopify. Hats, glassware and other non-alcohol items can still use Shopify checkout, or go through a split cart.
  4. Marketing tools connect. Bottle Nexus lists Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Zapier and n8n.

Bottle Nexus does not publish step-by-step Shopify docs. Expect to work through details with their team, such as how product pages trigger the buy button and how order events reach your email tool. A job posting at the company asks for Shopify experience, and it has a Shopify app for affiliate merchants, called Bottle Nexus Affiliate. When we checked in November 2026, that listing said it was not currently available on the App Store.

One practical point: alcohol orders live in Bottle Nexus, not in your Shopify admin. Plan your reporting and email flows with that in mind.

Fees

As of November 2026, Bottle Nexus publishes this on its pricing page:

  • $0 core service fee to the brand. Buy buttons, shop creation, retailer order routing and integrations are listed at $0.
  • The retailer pays. After an order ships, the retailer pays Bottle Nexus a routing commission. The rate is not published.
  • Extras cost extra. Custom websites, marketing consulting, email setup and ad-account setup are scoped separately. Your own hosting and app subscriptions stay with you.

Bottle Nexus also compares itself to AccelPay’s published starting rates. AccelPay’s own FAQ lists a $1,000 setup fee and $500 a month on a 12-month term. Ask any provider how the retailer’s margin and commission affect the shelf price your customer sees.

Coverage

The homepage says 45 states plus D.C. A March 2026 release says 48 states. Both may be true at different dates or for different partner types. Bottle Nexus also says coverage varies by product, retailer and address, and that not every product can ship to every state. Check your own SKUs before you promise national shipping.

Not legal advice. State rules change often. Confirm your setup with a beverage alcohol lawyer or compliance provider.

Pros

  • No core platform fee for the brand at the time of writing.
  • Keeps your existing site, including Shopify.
  • Fast setup. Bottle Nexus says about one week.
  • Built-in links to the marketing tools DTC brands already use.
  • Split cart for alcohol plus merchandise or gifts.
  • A creator and affiliate channel, and a LibDib route for small producers.

Cons

  • Younger company, and most growth figures are self-reported.
  • No public technical docs for Shopify or the API.
  • Coverage figures differ between pages.
  • Alcohol orders sit outside Shopify, so reporting needs work.
  • The retailer is the seller, so pricing, refunds and service follow the retailer’s process.
